03Music Education & Real-Time Audio

Synkii

Synkii is an interactive web classroom purpose-built for classical music academies and instrumental tutors who need true studio acoustic fidelity.

We engineered a browser-native environment powered by peer-to-peer WebRTC mesh audio, real-time Web MIDI hardware sync, and shared interactive sheet music annotations—requiring zero software downloads for students or teachers.

The Challenge

Overcoming critical bottlenecks in real-time execution.

Teaching music remotely over standard video meeting tools (Zoom, Google Meet, Teams) is an exercise in frustration. Conventional VoIP systems are aggressive with noise cancellation and speech compression, which treats acoustic instruments like pianos and violins as background noise and silences them. Furthermore, typical latency exceeds 200ms—making synchronous playing or rhythmic guidance impossible.

Core friction points

  • Acoustic clipping: Speech-centric codecs filter out the sustained harmonics, polyphony, and dynamic range essential for instrumental music lessons.
  • Latency lag: 200–300ms delays make duets, metronome synchronization, and real-time rhythmic feedback completely impractical.
  • Fragmented tools: Tutors were forced to manage 4 different applications simultaneously: a video call, a PDF viewer for sheet music, a digital piano app, and messaging.
  • Onboarding barrier: Requiring young students or non-technical parents to download custom audio drivers or software created massive churn.

Solution & Architecture

Engineered for speed, durability, and fault tolerance.

We built a completely browser-native real-time classroom architecture combining custom WebRTC peer-to-peer pipelines with zero-dependency Web Audio and Web MIDI integrations.

01

Custom Uncompressed Audio Engine

Engineered WebRTC audio constraints with disabled acoustic echo cancellation and noise suppression in instrument mode, streaming pure 48kHz stereo Opus audio at ultra-low buffer intervals.

02

Zero-Latency Web MIDI Synchronization

Direct hardware communication via the Web MIDI API captures digital piano keypresses and velocity, transmitting lightweight binary packets over WebRTC data channels in under 5ms.

03

Collaborative Canvas Score Viewer

Custom HTML5 Canvas rendering engine for sheet music featuring bi-directional real-time ink annotation, bookmarking, and synchronized page turning.

04

Multi-Camera Video Orchestration

Simultaneous dual-stream video support enabling instructors to broadcast both their face and an overhead camera capturing hands and posture without bandwidth degradation.

Core technologies:Next.js · TypeScript · WebRTC Mesh · Web Audio API · Web MIDI API · HTML5 Canvas · Node.js · Redis

Outcomes & Impact

Measurable results in production.

Synkii transformed remote music education for leading music academies across the UK and US, enabling teachers to deliver lessons that rival in-person instruction without software installation.

99.98%Session connection success rate
  • Over 35,000 interactive music lessons successfully conducted in the browser.
  • Average end-to-end audio latency dropped to under 20ms across domestic broadband connections.
  • 98% teacher satisfaction rating compared to legacy video conferencing tools.
  • Adopted by premier conservatory faculties and private music academies worldwide.

“Before Synkii, teaching classical piano online felt like fighting technology. King Squared understood our audio and latency challenges at a fundamental level and built a product that feels as immediate as sitting in the same studio.”
